Lina Mowafy is an Egyptian artist and painter living and working in Cairo, Egypt. After graduating from the American University in Cairo, Mowafy studied portraiture at the Charles Cecil Portraiture School in Florence, Italy and later went on to advance her skill at Central Saint Martins in London. Mowafy balanced her artistic vocation and her career in Advertising until making the switch as a full time painter.
Mowafy traverses between fauvist and expressionist art aesthetics identified by bold lines and a lively palette; examining themes of urban living, motherhood and feminist ideals, commentating on Egypt’s social and vernacular culture. In her search for new methods to "decipher the city", she often creates scenes that are chaotic, exuberant and multi-dimensional, where eccentric, otherworldly elements are often making a presence. Mowafy views abstraction as a spontaneous expression of one’s state of mind; a methodology she continuously experiments with in her voluminous and varied body of work.
