Hossam Dirar is an Egyptian multidisciplinary artist, born in Cairo and currently based in Barcelona. He earned his BA in Graphic Design from the Faculty of Applied Arts at Helwan University, Cairo, and later pursued an MA in Sound Art from the University of Barcelona. Following the Egyptian Revolution in 2011, Dirar transitioned into painting, drawing inspiration from his extensive travels through Europe and encounters with the works of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele.
Dirar's work reflects a deep exploration of identity, culture, and societal themes. His artistic practice evolved from figurative depictions influenced by nature to a sophisticated blend of impressionism and abstract expressionism. The cultural contrasts he experienced while living between Egypt and Europe led him to examine ancient Egyptian history, women’s rights, and the dynamics of liberty and tradition.
Through his art, Dirar captures the essence of heritage, layering calligraphy, icons, and patterns with vibrant colors to reinterpret traditional symbols in a contemporary context. His work aims to reveal the unseen in the visible, offering viewers new perspectives shaped by their own beliefs and imaginations.
Dirar's extensive exhibition history includes solo and group shows in Egypt, Europe, and beyond, affirming his place as a dynamic voice in contemporary art.
