Alaa Abdel Hamid is an Egyptian visual artist born in 1986. Alaa is also a researcher and a writer who is based in Cairo. He graduated from the faculty of Fine Arts from Helwan University in 2008, specializing in sculpting. He has also received a master degree in 2018 from University of Geneva from the faculty of Art and design.
His practice is based on digging into the concept of history, and its intersections with the current issues. And how we write it from outside the power circles. That is why he is interested in archiving, collecting and reproducing, to produce alternative historical narratives.
Abdel Hamid's work has been shown in many exhibitions, including: Nuit Blanche - Paris - 2017, Biennale of Independent Art Spaces - Geneva 2017, Cairo OFF Biennale - Darb 18 17 - 2015, and the BJCM Biennale, Thessaloniki 2011.
He has received many awards and grants, including: production grants from Warehouse 421 and Art Jameel in 2020, Mophradat 2015, and several residency programs, including: Cite Internationale des arts, Paris 2015, and the Camargo Foundation, Cassis 2016.
